According to the findings of the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation into the fatal plane crash of longtime dirt racer Scott Bloomquist, Bloomquist probably deliberately crashed his plane into a building.
On August 16, 2024, Bloomquist's plane collided with a barn on his Tennessee property next to an airstrip. According to the NTSB's June 5 investigation report, "the pilot's intentional flight into a building as an act of suicide" was the probable cause of the crash. “At this time, the family of Scott Bloomquist is not making any public statements regarding the plane crash or the recent NTSB findings,” a statement said (via Fox Sports).
"As they navigate this difficult time, they are focused on supporting one another and respectfully request privacy. We ask that the media refrain from making any further inquiries at this time. We appreciate your understanding.
Bloomquist, 60, is the Lucas Oil dirt Late Model series' all-time winningest driver and the World of Outlaws Late Model champion. He was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2002 and is regarded as one of the greatest dirt track drivers ever.
He won over 30 Late Model races in the World of Outlaws and had over 90 wins in the Lucas Oil dirt Late Model series.
In 2019, Bloomquist suffered significant lower-body injuries in a motorcycle accident in Daytona. He was told he had prostate cancer a year before the crash of his plane, just before he was supposed to have back surgery. Bloomquist said that he had to be hospitalized shortly before his plane crash because he didn't notice a horsefly bite on one of his legs because he was still numb from the motorcycle crash.
